Commons' users aim to build and maintain in good faith a repository of media files which to the best of our knowledge are free or freely-licensed. The precautionary principle is that where there is significant doubt about the freedom of a particular file, it should be deleted.
Argument som att ”vi kan komma undan med det”, som till exempel följande, strider mot Commons mål:
- "Upphovsrättsinnehavaren kommer inte ta sig besväret att stämma eller kommer inte att ha råd."
- "Upphovsrättsinnehavaren kommer aldrig att upptäcka det."
- "Upphovsrättsinnehavaren kommer inte ha något emot det/bör vara glad över att vi har spridit hens verk."
- "Ingen vet vem upphovsrättsinnehavaren är, så det spelar ingen roll."
- "The file is obviously common property. It can be found all over the internet and nobody has complained."
