This specific drawing from a vehicle engineering textbook has been explicitly found ineligible for copyright in Finland by the government-appointed Copyright Council in its opinion TN 2011:12 (in Finnish) (Request for comment). Unofficial translation of the specific reasoning:
- In the drawing, that illustrates the structure of an automobile's alternator, the subject has been drawn in a style that has been commonly adopted in the field of vehicle engineering.
- The drawing illustrates a conventional part of an automobile, whose original portrayal is significantly limited by the part's conventional shape, and the clear and technically sufficiently detailed illustration as required by appropriate use in a textbook. There have not been several alternative ways to illustrate the same subject, when striving for a clear and technically correct expression.
- The Copyright Council sees, that the drawing does not demonstrate its creator's creative personal decisions to such degree, that no one else would arrive at the same end result, when setting out to draw the same subject. The Copyright Council sees, that the drawing in question is not independent and original to such degree, that it would exceed the threshold of originality.
