Photo challenge box
{{editprotected}} Hi. In 2015 the Photo challenge box on the main page was modified to inform about the 2015 European Science Photo Competition. Now that we have another International Science Photo Competition, is it possible to do the same? I am a volunteer at Commons Photo challenge, so I can take care that they are alternated.
Last time, if I remember correctly, the link to the monthly photo challenge was totally removed, and that was not nice. I don't expect we do the same, quite the contrary, just to put them in a certain alternation. I ping also Jarekt.

- I cannot find how it was decided in 2015, but I am sure it was there on the main page, and it remained also in December when the competition was prolonged in certain countries.

- or we can have the last two weeks of November and the first of December, that would also work. Current monthly challange seem to work. we are asking less time than in 2015, and this tiem the event is global.

- Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2017 is now mulitlingual and provides basic information and we had banner but still not in all the countries so this would help to get decent upload where no campaign will occur.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:00, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

We only have 12 days left for Europe, I would ask for the whole infobox. Plus we have Asia and Africa in December so the best period could be from now to the first week of December. User:Steinsplitter the new monthly challenges are here so you can switch back to the standard layout, for some days, so they can start with enough coverage. In the meantime we decide which country to postpone the deadline and we warm up Africa, than I'll ask you to put the WSC notice back. As i said, I am not thirsty, we should share the space! - User:Steinsplitter after circa one week considering that some big countries ending on December, the 15th (netherlands, Norway, Malaysia, New Zealand) still have zero uploaded files, it would be nice if you can put the WSC2017 banner back. User:Steinsplitter you can remove it. But we might decide to merge some empty category in the international one, if we arrange that upload might resume from certain areas, so I'll ask you the infobox back again. - Template:Main Page Template has only a single "Announcement Text" which shows up in the green box on the top right, and it looks like each time there is some other competition going on Photo Challenge is temporary removed from that spot and replaced with other announcement. Perhaps we could rewrite Template:Main Page Template to allow multiple Announcements. --Jarekt (talk) 15:23, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

- I am not sure why I am pinged, my request was specific for December (like the previous one of 2015). What it is sure is that I am one of the only people Colin who pointed out the request openly. Usually, as far as I know, there is no calendar, no guideline, simply some people with the appropriate flag can change and remove a link with another one. I had to wait and ping to have this request processed... In any case, I support a general discussion to give space on the infobox to two challenges at the same time. That is WLE, WLM, future Wiki loves love (about communities and antropology, i think it's called this way), Wiki Loves Food and Wiki Science Competition, even the Asian month in November as far as I am concerned... with the monthly challenges I think they should share the space at the same time, and this new layout should be introduced. Or we need a more structured calendar in a subpage with specific request. We discuss sitenotices on meta, that's very similar as global impact (the main page has thousand of views per day). Every link transcluded from Wikidata regarding Google Maps geo-locations give a 404-error.
For example, click on the Google Maps-link at the following Commons Category: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Open_Garage
Hopefully this can be solved.
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wp-world/ also gives a 404-error. https://tools.wmflabs.org/admin/tool/wp-world is still online. Please fix these issues.

Suggestion: give the mobile home page some love
When you land on the mobile homepage for Commons, there is no visible Upload button, there's no 'Upload file' button available in the menu, and clicking 'anyone can contribute' takes you to a page on participation, which links a whole bunch of ways to contribute - but still doesn't offer any way to upload images! I had to Google 'wikimedia commons upload' to find the appropriate page.
Given that a lot of original photos nowadays originate on smartphones, it feels like offering a friction-free method to upload via the mobile site would be desirable.

Permanent "Photo Challenge" box and optional "Announcement" box
I changed the Template:Main Page Template to make Photo Challenge box permanent and Announcement box optional. In the past we used announcement box to display periodic announcements and use it for Photo challenge otherwise. With the current system we could have up to two announcements on the top right and one on the bottom left. --Jarekt (talk) 14:33, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Current English text is: "Take some photos and upload them to meet our monthly thematic challenge, get inspiration and try new subjects! Learn more about the challenges!". I think we should shorten it to "Participate in our monthly thematic photography challenge. Get inspiration and try new subjects.
