OTRS[edit]

From your user page:

“First of all, OTRS can't contact right holders. So either right holders need to contact OTRS all by themselves (sure..) or a user needs to ask them to contact OTRS. I did that a couple of times, I've never seen anyone else doing that. You would get a lot more response if OTRS could actively contact right holders, but for some stupid legal reason they can't. WMF is afraid it would look like WMF is contacting them and OTRS is somehow legally not WMF.”

The WMF lawyers isn't as far as I know (as an OTRS agent) stopping us from reaching out to rights holders, it is just that it is not done, and that unspoken guidelines are not to use OTRS emails for other things than to respond to things, but I have sent emails to some people and asked for permissions for some images in a DR discussion, using the OTRS emails. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 18:30, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

@Josve05a: Interesting. I wrote that part because someone (I think an administrator) told me just that. I'll try to remember who said it in what discussion. - Alexis Jazz 18:38, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
I might be wrong, but I have not been told off directly by WMF legal yet. Only been in IRC-discssions where we've discussed if it is our place to do so - pointing out copyvios on our projects to the copyright owners. We've also not been given that as an assignment from the Commons-community, only to act as a permissions handling service (and responding to information enquiries and questions). --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 18:57, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
@Josve05a: I found it! (that took a while) It was Green Giant (OTRS volunteer and administrator), so that much I remembered correctly. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Naomi Campbell and Anatoly Evdokimov (Evdokimov show).jpg:
"OTRS cannot initiate the email chain because that is not its purpose and because it might give the impressio that the WMF are contacting them. In fact, every email sent by OTRS clearly states that it is sent by volunteers on behalf of the community but not on behalf of the WMF."
I hope you're not in trouble now? - Alexis Jazz 14:05, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Well, there are no set rules, just common sense not to do so (in most circumstances) - hence why we normally don't do so. But in highly unusual circumstances, some of us do so anyway.. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 14:10, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
@Josve05a: yes, I've noticed OTRS volunteers (and administrators) are not all following the same rules or even the same policies. It's confusing sometimes. - Alexis Jazz 14:16, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
I was an OTRS volunteer for a couple of years around 2010-2011 (I think?). I initiated a few tickets (i.e. contacted people first to ask about clearance) but it was definitely not standard procedure. I didn't hear of it being frowned upon, however. I also stopped by to say that your user page is a good assessment of Commons, for the most people. It was interesting to read. File:Country Fire Authority logo.svg[edit]

Australia has a strict copyright act that most simple logos (such as the File:Country Fire Authority logo.svg) that they have to be uploaded as Fair-Use on English Wikipedia. So the license of the logo must be used from the country of origin (per source), not what it might be in the US. See COM:TOO and scroll down to Australia. Bidgee (talk) 23:27, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Dear Alex,

Does this video seem like own work to you? This youtube account only has 4 videos--and feels suspicious but I don't know if it means anything. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:44, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: It could be, since it's amateur footage. Someone who understands Spanish may be able to tell. The vlogger seems to be criticizing the video/Sofía Reyes, so I'm guessing she didn't create it. The quality is really poor anyway, she has already won some MTV awards so sooner or later she'll probably appear on MTV International. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:09, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it to revert-war. Category:500px maintenance[edit]

Hi there, I'm wondering about the purpose of this new category. Did you create this because 500px stopped offering CC licences? As far as I can see, many images in there have been reviewed, so the original licenses can be considered valid. De728631 (talk) 14:38, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

However, your table is bugged. Please compare the licenses and ID numbers with the actual uploads at Commons. Example: File:Cruise ship Queen Mary 2 in Flam Norway (99262299).jpg has the ID 99262299 and not 256344669. The licence is CC-by-sa-3.0 and not CC0 which is confirmed by source code. De728631 (talk) 17:43, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
Apparently this was only a single line that got botched. All other entries seem to be correct. Thanks a lot for your work. De728631 (talk) 17:48, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@De728631: Where do you see 256344669?
I should be able to create tables for many photos, but this won't work forever, so this is the time to import some. There is also another issue: I am not trusted. So it would be best if several admins would spot-check some entries to make sure I'm not evil. (or made a buggy table..) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:52, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
I think De728631 is talking about Special:Diff/311444779/311445292. Storkk (talk) 18:01, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
I think I already know what went wrong. The 500px link was correct and so was the license, only the filename was wrong. Cruise ship Queen Mary 2 in Flam Norway is in there twice, the other entry is correct, which is why I didn't see the problem initially. This just happens when you work this fast. This is not a complete showstopper anyway, you can just search search Commons for the 500px link and find the right image. I'll fix it though so you won't have to. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:05, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
There may be one or two more wrong links and licenses (just fixed another). And I also added a "Reviewed" column where the current status can be marked. De728631 (talk) 18:29, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@De728631: This is just a bug, I'll make a new table. I would actually prefer if you just blanked either the filename or the 500px link. Don't bother spending time fixing them, I will. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:35, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
This was not my fault. (and there is nothing I can do about it, users have to enter the correct source) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:13, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Votex[edit]

Things you should know:

  • Over at en:wp CheckUser Bbb23 imposed a Checkuserblock on 150.143.48.3 after (s)he reported an editor at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents for vandalism [1]. CheckUser Zzuuzz identified the reporter as "Vote (X) for Change" [2]. Now, "Vote (X) for Change" has not edited since 2011. How was Bbb23 able to run CheckUser when CheckUser data is only stored for three months?
  • The administrators at en:wp regularly vandalise articles. When they are reported at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents the discussions descend into farce. Example:

What about April?

1) Favonian did no such thing to the article 1664. 2)the article in question hasn't been edited since May. 3)Even if Favonian had made the edit as presented, it isn't vandalism, and we don't block for a single error. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 13:47, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Alexis JazzI would recommend you read [3]. Why would someone take what happens at English Wikipedia and bring the drama over here? Except to create drama. I stand by my comment. That statement, and that edit, is taken completely out of context, as is the norm for Vote X. I have no further comment. 78.26 (talk) 16:55, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: re-pinging because of malformatting on initial response. 78.26 (talk) 16:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
@78.26: I have no idea about what this case is and if that edit was appropriate or not. But you said: "No such edit took place". My eyes must be deceiving me because I do see an edit, from Favonian, adding the information cited in that report. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:16, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
I said I wouldn't reply, and I shouldn't, but out of respect for your many contributions I will anyway. Context, context, context. Vote X very selectively picks and chooses what they share. If you think the whole story, presented in an honest manner then I have several bridges in my collection for sale. When I wrote that, if you go back to the original conversation, you'll see that in context what I meant was that the edit did not exist as presented by Vote X. Sure, Favonian edited that page. But they did not do what they were accused of, namely vandal ize the page. Vote X made that accusation up. Good day. I truly will not be wasting any more of my volunteer time on this, and I truly suggest you also not waste time on behalf of one of the most abusive editors on this project. 78.26 (talk) 05:12, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
@78.26: The original conversation was nowhere to be found.. Turns out it was removed without archiving. So here it is. The reporter indeed appears to be doing strange things, but you replied clearly: "1) Favonian did no such thing to the article 1664.". I see the context now and while I'm pretty sure this was not vandalism, Favonian did make that edit. (and it was corrected by Power~enwiki) If they are as bad as you say they are, I wouldn't even be surprised if this was a revert-trap specifically set up for this. (I described this kind of revert-trap a while ago, but it was probably invented years before that) But when a user is abusive like this, you have to be extra careful. Don't deny the existence of an edit that clearly does exist. Don't use more words than needed. That report could have been closed with "Normal administrative action, no proof of vandalism", ideally linking the edit that was being referred to. That would give her considerably less ammunition. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:26, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

I patiently waited for days when do you realize at last that Incnis Mrsi has no relation at all to this stuff about Vote X and Favonian’s warring against her in English Wikipedia. Page Edit Summary[edit]

Dear Alexis, thank you for your latest contribution on the page category:Alessio Di Zio. I've noticed that you've made a lot of edits and since there's no edit summary I was just curious to know the reason behind this different changes and why you think this new page set up and formatting is better. In my original version the short biography was featured in three different languages, are they totally gone? - I can see that there's still something when I look into the edit section, but now it all seems very messy in terms of formatting, the bio is fragmented etc... I would really appreciate it if you could provide some explanation. Also you cropped the polaroid image I uploaded, why do you think it's better without the white frame? Please just keep in mind that this portrait has always been uploaded and reproduced like it is around the web, it has this pretty distinctive aesthetic, and somehow it is by now pretty typical and representative of that artist, why change it only here on wiki? Thank you --Howardlovy (talk) 21:30, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

@Howardlovy: if you are using Commons in German or Spanish (you can change the language in your preferences) you will see the other one. For the English description, all the information from the short description was duplicated in the long description, so I kept the long description. Category pages should not be very long because their main purpose is to provide an overview of images in that category. It is not a Wikipedia page. In its original form, it would have been deleted sooner or later just like Alessio Di Zio. And on Wikipedia, I'm not sure they would meet notability requirements. The original is still here: File:Alessio Di Zio - Portrait.jpg. For something like infobox use, it is preferred to crop large pictures so it's easier to make out a face in the small infobox picture. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:26, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Perfect, I guess it all makes sense, thank you very much for your answer, I appreciate it. I'll check about the notability requirements that you mentioned, and as soon as I can I'm gonna add a couple details to the category page just to fine tune it. all the best. --Howardlovy (talk) 01:36, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Why you tagging maps which I created with tag "Files from Photobucket"?[edit]

I noticed that you tagged a certain number of maps which I created and uploaded with tag/category "Files from Photobucket" (for example this one: [4]). I never uploaded any of maps to Photobucket website. I always uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons after I made them and Wikimedia Commons is a web site where these maps firstly appeared on the Internet. If they later appeared at Photobucked it is because some other people took them from Wikimedia Commons and uploaded them to Photobucket. But these maps are not "from Photobucket". So, please stop tagging wrongly maps which I created with that tag. Thank you. PANONIAN (talk) 18:51, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

@PANONIAN: This was the reason. Citing anything on photobucket as a reference is a really bad idea anyway. The files to go into that category were not hand-picked, feel free to move them to Category:Files that mention Photobucket. Check them carefully though, I've also seen some user (who was not the uploader) adding photobucket spam to a file page. Even someone who inserted a photobucket link into the "source" field, seemingly thinking it would magically be uploaded that way. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:06, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
I am careful with my references. This image from Photobucket actually originating from this book: Istorijski atlas, Geokarta, Beograd, 1999. That is why I listed it as one of my references. I have that book in my home. However, one thing is usage of Photobucket image in list of additional secondary references (not primary ones) and another thing is if someone took some image from Photobucket and upload it to Wikimedia. With your categories you implied that I "simply took my maps from Photobucket and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons" which is totally incorrect. I am author of maps which I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and I made these maps from empty layer in Photoshop software. So, there is no even a single dot in these maps which is not originally drawn by me. I also do not see a reason to use "Category:Files that mention Photobucket" for my maps. As I said, in example which you mentioned, the reference image is in fact image from Serbian history atlas which was uploaded to Photobucket. If I used images from Photobucket as secondary references for some other maps which I uploaded, you can mention these examples as well, and I can clarify the correct origin of these images. PANONIAN (talk) 12:54, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
@PANONIAN: this is nothing personal. Photobucket as a source is often poorly indicated, so it's inevitable some files will be selected that are mentioning Photobucket for other reasons. You could kick your maps both out of Category:Files from Photobucket and Category:Files that mention Photobucket, but next time I scan for them I will re-add them to Category:Files from Photobucket. I will exclude files that are in Category:Files that mention Photobucket, but if you don't want your maps there I have no way of excluding them. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:08, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Maybe it is not personal, but there is serious problem with your methodology here. What is the issue with Photobucket any way? Are you opposing or proposing usage of Photobucket as a source? (Just, please, clarify this, so that we can discuss this issue properly). In both cases, my maps are not a proper address for these issues. In my last edits, I clearly clarified that I used Photobucket images only as a secondary references for files which I uploaded (for example here). I have very standardized way of usage of references for my maps. My primary references are always reliable historical books and atlases and then I also list secondary references which are maps from various web sites, which serve only as illustration to readers who are not able to see books which I used as primary references, since these books are mostly in Serbian language and published in Serbia. Now, if you are in fact proponent of Photobucked and you somehow advertising that website, I repeat that files that I uploaded are not a proper place for such "business". I neither directly moved files from Photobucket to Wikimedia neither used them as a main or primary references. So, please, "next time you scan for files" be so kind to check the exact nature of usage of word "Photobucket" on each page before you conduct further actions. PANONIAN (talk) 14:10, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Aside from all that, if I understood correctly, you simply scanning Wikimedia for word "Photobucket" and then you adding all file pages where you find that word into category "Files from Photobucket" without checking are these files really from Photobucket or that word there is used for other reason? Correct? Do you realize that by such action you wrongly indicating origin of some images? I am quite sure that this is against Wikimedia policies. PANONIAN (talk) 14:33, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I moved about a 1000 files into that category right after creating it. This isn't about your maps. Category:Images from websites contains many things, it's not advertising or anything.
"be so kind to check the exact nature of usage of word "Photobucket" on each page before you conduct further actions"
Seriously, no fucking way am I going to look at 1000 files individually before moving them. The way you mention photobucket on your maps, I have no way of filtering them out. I'm cleaning up the category a bit now, but if you don't want your files in Category:Files that mention Photobucket while still mentioning photobucket.. well, they will just end up right back in Category:Files from Photobucket.
"you simply scanning Wikimedia for word "Photobucket" and then you adding all file pages where you find that word into category "Files from Photobucket" without checking are these files really from Photobucket or that word there is used for other reason? Correct?"
So report me on COM:AN/U. Go ahead, make my day! Face-smile.svg - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:42, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

I will move these files to "Category:Files that mention Photobucket", but simply because if I would waste too much of my free time here it would delay some projects which I am currently working on. Wouldn't mind a second opinion on these photos that are mid 20th Century. I've already nominated a couple of the obvious violations. Many of the flags are probably fine I expect. GMGtalk 00:14, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo: File:Andriod Developers Logo.svg is Creative Commons (fixed), most of the logos (if they are from the US) will qualify as PD-textlogo. I'm not sure about File:Gab Logo.svg, it's quite simple but considerably more than "simple geometric shapes". I don't see why File:Hank Williams Jr. "If the South Woulda Won" Flag.svg would be free. @GreenMeansGo: I may have created COM:RENEWAL but I don't do renewal check myself because I don't fully understand how they work. (Clindberg is better at that afaik) The license for these doesn't seem right:
I don't even see a "no renewal" claim? The first two are possibly USGov, but I didn't look into them. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:14, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Or potentially it was too late in the evening for me to be thinking about copyright and I totally made that up. We'll see how DR goes. If someone can explain how these are somehow alright then no harm done. GMGtalk 18:19, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Proposal regarding GFDL licenses[edit]

I just wanted to give you a high-five. I had been working on a similar proposal but remained unsure how to properly word it. I hope your proposal passes. Any progress towards commons being a place for the free exchange of work (under properly licensed conditions) it something I'm entirely behind! -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 16:55, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Illustration from a Swedish children's book first published in 1907[edit]

Hi Alexis,

I would like to get your opinion on this image that I uploaded today. I am writing a Wiki profile on the illustrator, Mary Hamilton Frye (1850-1951). She illustrated a Swedish children's book written by Selma Lagerloff (1858-1940) and first published in 1907.

MHFrye Adventure of Nils Illustration 1.jpg

I am scanning images from a 1930 edition of the book, and I would like to upload all to Wikimedia and use in a gallery on MH Frye's wikipedia page (still in draft). I believe the illustrations are Public Domain (PD), because the original book was published in 1907. I am a little confused as to author's life. Do I put down the author of the book, Lagerloff or the illustrations author, MH Frye? I am assuming MH Frye.

I could ask this question at the Help Center or the Village Pump, but I tend to get answers there that refer me back to copyright rules pages/PD art pages, and I am often still confused. Your answers and comments have always been very helpfu.

Below is the first illustration that I have uploaded. I want to make sure it is correctly listed as public domain before I continue to upload additional images. I am also wondering whether I need to add Swedish copyright/PD info.

thx MauraWen (talk) 19:44, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

@MauraWen: as I was writing my answer, this question turned out to be quite a bit more complex than I thought. I'll have to ask myself at COM:VPC. I'll get back to you. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:26, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: I can tell you one thing right away: the illustrations will be perfectly safe to upload to enwiki as PD-USonly. I'm not sure yet about Commons. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:45, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: Upload to enwiki as PD-USonly, upload to Commons in 2022. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:18, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
thanks! @Alexis Jazz:. I would have never figured that out on my own. I have already uploaded this image to Commons, and I cannot find a way to delete the image. I will keep working on it. MauraWen (talk) 13:52, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: The image is perfectly fine at Commons. Since Mary Hamilton Frye was American, the country of origin for this artwork is the US, and it is out of copyright (PD-1923). There is no need to transfer it to the English Wikipedia. De728631 (talk) 14:11, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

I admit the no permission is my fault, I apologise here. However, the no source is tagging right. The file is missing the source, the user has the responsibility to add it. --B dash (talk) 05:54, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

using the FOP copyright[edit]

Hi Alexis,

I thought I understood (now) the copyright/PD issue for stained glass in England. I am using the panorama copyright UK for stained glass windows, both on Flickr images and one photo I scanned from a book. Is that not correct? My St. Elizabeth of Hungary image is being flagged for deletion. Please advise. thx MauraWen (talk) 18:08, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@MauraWen: FoP itself is not a license. It gives permission for what is depicted (the stained glass, or a statue, etc) but not for its depiction (the photograph). Which is interesting, I can't recall running into this before. What if the thing depicted is covered by FoP and the photograph is a slavish copy? I don't know. The stained glass that was installed before 1923 can be tagged {{PD-art|PD-1923}}, those where the author of the stained glass died more than 70 years ago {{PD-art|PD-old-auto|deathyear=1900}} or a combination: {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1900}}. But if they didn't? It's still covered by FoP and Bridgeman v. Corel, but I wouldn't know how to license it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:31, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks for the information and your quick response. I am going to change the copyright tags this morning to "PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1924", and hopefully those changes will save the images from being deleted. I explained what I planned to do on Magog the Ogre's talk page, as that is the person who has marked my images for deletion, and asked if he/she still had a problem with the tag I am planning to use, to let me know. And I have not heard back. MauraWen (talk) 12:42, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thank you so much for changing the CWh image tags! I was away from my laptop for the rest of the day after I contacted you and did not find a moment to address the copyright tags until this morning. You are awesome! MauraWen (talk) 12:53, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: you're welcome. As for FoP, the strange answer is this: "slavish copy" only applies to works in the public domain. It is not known if it would also apply to works that are still in copyright, but Commons assumes it doesn't. So {{PD-art}} requires the depicted work to be in the public domain. If it's not and you want to use {{FoP-UK}} the photo must be freely licensed (Creative Commons or similar). So you can't upload something like St Katherine's Aisle Window because it was installed in 1992 and the creator passed away in 2016. You would have to take a photo of the window yourself or convince the photographer to release the photo with a free license to be able to use {{FoP-UK}}. Hope that helps. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:45, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Question on the "published in the U.S. between 1923 and 1927" copyright tag[edit]

Hi Alexis,

If I am annoying you with too many questions, let me know and I will space my questions further apart. I am working on Margaret Redmond's profile right now and I know you (someone) notified me that the image could not be used because of the 1937 creation date. I understand that. Isaiah_stained_glass_window,_All_Saints_Church,_Petersbourough,_NH_by_Margaret_Redmond.jpg

Is there any way you (we) could find an acceptable PD copyright tag for this image? I would love to place any stained glass image on Redmond's profile. thx MauraWen (talk) 19:13, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

@MauraWen: the copyright tag for File:Isaiah stained glass window, All Saints Church, Petersbourough, NH by Margaret Redmond.jpg is probably acceptable because the church is located in the US. The only "if" would be if there actually was a copyright notice on the glass that we just can't see on the photo. I don't know how likely that would be. Can't imagine someone in 1937 put a copyright notice it, registered the copyright and renewed it. If they failed any of those steps it's public domain. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:26, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
Thx! @Alexis Jazz: MauraWen (talk) 19:35, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: be aware this is only valid for the US. If the church had been anywhere else it wouldn't have been valid. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:38, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz:, Good to know. I did find a wikicommons page with a table listing countries with copyright info and tags, so I have that to refer to, now. MauraWen (talk) 19:41, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Do you know where this video image appears? Due to this video's unique design its almost impossible to find its time location. Its from the state of Sabah, East Malaysia. I was born and raised in West Malaysia before I immigrated to Canada. From its amateur quality, I could have taken it myself...if I was in Malaysia, so its likely own work by Andy Lee.
