Because as I said when casting this !vote, the effort you made to take that picture has to be recognized somehow. Daniel Case (talk) 20:58, 13 December 2016 (UTC) |
Behavioural context[edit]
Hi, thanks for this amazing picture File:Pied_kingfisher_(Ceryle_rudis_rudis)_female_eating_chick.jpg! Would you know what the chick is of, the same species? might be of use in some animal behaviour related article if the context is clearly understood. Shyamal L. (talk) 14:29, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know for sure @Shyamal:. There were no other species around yet about 300 pied kingfishers nesting in the same area, so I make that 90%+ sure. I've researched the net and cannot find any mention of cannibalism for kingfishers. I didn't capture any swallowing, so I thought it was possible the bird is playing with the chick, but my wife saw the bird being swallowed. I'd love to know more, as would our guide - it was new to him. Charles (talk) 14:41, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

- Thanks @Shyamal:. Yes I was notified some weeks ago by a guy in India and have written to the Indian Postal Authorities, but no reply of course... I am visiting India in November - perhaps I will try again. Charles (talk) 19:08, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
- If you are visiting southern India, I will be happy to take you to some good birding places. Shyamal L. (talk) 04:20, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hope you had a good trip to India.
I am guessing from your image stream that you did not get to southern India!PS: just saw the Black-hooded oriole picture, looking forward to seeing more of the southern specialities. Shyamal L. (talk) 02:41, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Archaeodontosaurus, Ikan Kekek, El Grafo, and Charles; you have all been very kind and helpful in showing how the VI and QI processes work (I'm nowhere near the FP level yet as you know) and giving me tips on taking better pictures. I know I have a lot to learn about photos. I do truly appreciate all your help. PumpkinSky talk 21:54, 1 April 2017 (UTC) |

OTRS[edit]
I have a question: have you ever been OTRS verified? Your contributions are amazing so it would be great to make sure they can always stay. - Alexis Jazz 12:34, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, no not verified - never heard of the process! Do I start it or do you? Charles (talk) 13:30, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Only you can. You send a mail to OTRS that originates from a mail address that can be linked to you, for example an address on your domain or that is listed on your website. A note of some kind (like in User:OGPlanet) should be on your user page afterwards. OTRS does have a long backlog so this could take several weeks. - Alexis Jazz 14:48, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
Charlesjsharp's favourite photos[edit]
Category:Charlesjsharp's favourite photos
I don't personally have a problem with this category (as long as you only add photos you made yourself to it), but that's also considering your contributions to Commons. What I mean to say with that is: if I created a category like that for my photos (just assume any photo I've taken myself will make you scream into a pillow when it concerns technique) the category would (and I think rightfully so) be nominated for discussion.
I've never seen a category like this before so it may be wise to discuss this category on the VP first. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 12:07, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Alexis Jazz Thanks for your helpful comments. This category is only for my own photos and I wonder where it differs, for instance, from the many personal categories on this image? Is it the wording you are concerned about or the concept? The concept came from the little heart icon used by user:xray on his favourites (the linked image is one of his favourites) Charles (talk) 12:26, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- It may have escaped everyone's attention, it was created 23 April. I started a discussion at Commons:Village pump#Photographers' favourites categories. If the community doesn't object to it than neither will I. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:50, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Creator template[edit]
You mind if I give you a Creator template like you see in the "Author" field of File:Amboy (California, USA) -- 2012 -- 4.jpg? I'll also put Category:Photographs by Charlesjsharp in there so all your photos will appear there. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:21, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- Here's an example of what it'll look like: File:Rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis roseicollis) composite 3 of 3.jpg. This photo now also appears in Category:Photographs by Charlesjsharp. I didn't know when you started, so I used the 2003 date from your website. More information could be added to d:Q54800218, you can compare to d:Q34788025 (Dietmar Rabich) to see what else could be entered. If you like it I'll add it to all your photos. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:53, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Alexis Jazz, yes please - as long as you change English to Scottish!!!!!!!!!!! Charles (talk) 20:54, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- I saw "living in Oxfordshire and London" on your site, but that's just where you live now!!
The nationality depends on your "country of citizenship" on d:Q54800218. I changed it to UK which results in "British" which is probably better since you now live in England. I don't know your bio (place/date of birth) but that can be entered separately. Having a category with all your photos in it is quite useful by the way. If anyone wants to see all your photos now, they would have to navigate to Special:ListFiles/Charlesjsharp which isn't quite the same as a category. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:45, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- All done, except for File:Indian roller (Coracias benghalensis benghalensis).jpg. There are now 3465 photos in Category:Photographs by Charlesjsharp, some would be crops of your photos uploaded by other users. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:03, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- I saw "living in Oxfordshire and London" on your site, but that's just where you live now!!
- In Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-uploads you can set "Author's name" to "{{Creator:Charles J Sharp}}", that should ensure new uploads will also get the creator template. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:15, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Category removal[edit]
I don't understand this. Is it no longer valued? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:12, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- I had nominated the same species twice so just removed the assessment detials from one of them. The other is File:Pygmy blue (Brephidium exilis thompsoni) 2.JPG 07:58, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
"Quality images of Nymphalidae specimens"[edit]
Hi Charles, all the "specimens" categories use this kind of naming, so let's keep it consistent ;-) Cheers --LamBoet (talk) 08:56, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- HI LamBoet. Just trying to tidy things up. The Valued images use the word mounted (Archaeodontorus agreed) - see category:valued images of lepidoptera Charles (talk) 09:00, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- Again, the consistency of the whole category tree is key here. Valued images categories are named in a cumbersome way that will have to be corrected, and the syntax you have used is not even consistent with them. --LamBoet (talk) 09:06, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- Please go ahead and correct them. That would be very helpful. Charles (talk) 09:08, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- I just did – Thanks for understanding. --LamBoet (talk) 09:44, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- Actually I was expecting you to keep the word 'mounted' in, but User:Archaeodontosaurus may be very happy with your actions. Charles (talk) 11:47, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- Perfect for me --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 11:52, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
