Structured Data on Commons IRC Office Hour, Tuesday 26 June[edit]

Greetings,

There will be an IRC office hour for Structured Data on Tuesday, 26 June from 18:00-19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. You can find more details, as well as date and time conversion, at the IRC Office Hours page on Meta.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing you there if you can make it. -- Keegan (talk) 20:54, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

The logo is from a channel that is property of the State of Nuevo Leon, therefore, is public property and using it in fair use does not violate copyright. That very logo is uploaded to the English Wikipedia at this address: [1]--MexTDT (talk) 05:02, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Fair use is not allowed on Commons, but only in some WMF projects. See Commons:Licensing. I don't think that government-owned companies are not allowed to own copyrights. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:37, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Please do not delete my uploaded images[edit]

I have copied and pasted the images files that I have uploaded to Wikipedia Common.

I will discuss each one by one as folows:

Files uploaded by Bodvar Antonio Gregersen (talk · contribs)[edit] Historical photos and newspaper. Proper author/source and country of origin should be provided and license tags corrected.

File:El TelegrafoDelHomenajeGenMorales.pdf The above newspaper article was taken from the Internet and it was fully cited in the reference section of my article.

File:Colonel Juan Francisco Morales Llerena.jpg The above file was made from my own copy of the photo which I was bequeathed by a legal WILL and TESTIMONY of my mother.

File:Gen. Juan F. Morales Llerena.jpg The above file was made from my own copy of the photo which I was bequeathed by a legal WILL and TESTIMONY of my mother.

File:General Juan Francisco Morales Llerena.jpg The above file was made from my own copy of the photo which I was bequeathed by a legal WILL and TESTIMONY of my mother.

Physical copy ownership doesn't assume copyrights ownership. See also Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Ecuador. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:56, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Please do not delete the following files that I have uploaded except for one (File:Gatazo.pdf.pdf) to Wikipedia Common because every photo of General Juan Francisco Morales Llerena is in the Public Domain because the photos were made in the late 1800's and early 1900's and, therefore, it is in the Public Domain in the United States because the pictures were taken before 1923 and, in Ecuador, because it has been more than 70 years since the pictures were made.

The File: El TelegrafoDelHomenajeGenMorales.pdf was taken off the Internet. The only thing the newspaper El Telegrafo requested that El Telegrafo be given full credit for the article which I have done in the reference section of General Morales Llerena's Wikipedia page.

File:LBNCCE-Alfaro-2313-PUBCOM (1).pdf - This document was published in 1897 in Quito, Ecuador. This document was stamped in blue on the front cover of the document "El Bliblioteca Nacional del Ecuador en Quito, Ecuador". This document is in the Public Domain in the United States because it was printed before 1923. It is in Public Domain in Ecuador because in Ecuador:

Copyright expires 70 years after death of copyright owner. Copyright of anonymous or pseudonymous works expires 70 years after first publication.

The document was fully documented in the Reference Section of the General Morales Llerena's Wikipedia page.

File:Gatazo.pdf.pdf - The book "La Guerra Civil de Ecuatoriana de 1895" and written by Elias Vicuna Munoz is NOT Public Domain because he died in 1997 or 70 years have not passed after the author's death for it to be within Ecuadorean Public Domain.

All the photos and jpg files of Juan Francisco Morales Llerena are legally my property under U.S.law. Besides the jpg files of Juan Francisco Morales Llerena are in the U.S. Public Domain laws and are in the Ecuadorian Public Domain because it has been over 70 years since the photos were taken in the late 1800's. These files are as follows:

File:Colonel Juan Francisco Morales Llerena.jpg File:Gen. Juan F. Morales Llerena.jpg File:General Juan Francisco Morales Llerena.jpg

The three files that follow:

File:Mensaje del Presidente about GenMoralesPagina274.pdf File:Mensaje del Presidente about GenMoralesPagina275.pdf File:Mensaje del Presidente about GenMoralesPagina276.pdf

were published before 1923 and are in the public domain in the United States and in Ecuador because the material in the above three files were printed in 1907. In fact, the copy of the book wherein the above three files came from states the following:

"NABU Public Domain Reprints:

You are holding a reproduction of an original work published before 1923 that is in public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other countries. You may copy and distribute this work as no entity (individual or corporate) has a copyright on the body of the work. This book may contain prior copyright references, and library stamps (as most of these works were scanned from library copies). These have been scanned and retained as part of the historical artifact."

The only file that I can ascertain that might not be in the public domain is the File:Gatazo.pdf.pdf. If it gets deleted, then I can live with it in as much as I would not like to lose it. If you have any questions about what I have written, please let me know.

You need to provide information about author/country of origin and fix license tag in every file description. It'll be good idea to make Creator template for author and use Wikidata for dates of life. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:46, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

What properties does Commons need?[edit]

Greetings,

Structured Commons will need properties to make statements about files. The development team is working on making the software ready to support properties; the question is, what properties does Commons need?

You can find more information and examples to help find properties in a workshop on Commons. Please participate and help fill in the list, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

request for assistance on Lmm1245 potential file deletion[edit]

Hello,

I am new to this, so I am not fully clear what details must be provided for adding photos that I own. For the two in question, the USS Vernon County and the USS Tom Green County, I am the owner and I possess the original slides. The pictures were taken by my father while in the Marines. They are of a training mission while stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

Given the numbers on the side of the ships, there is no question what ships they are. Please advise what else I need to provide to avoid the files from being deleted. I believe they are some of the best pictures of these ships in the public domain, and many people will enjoy them.

Thank you,

Lew Mangin

Also, I see you may have some other questions from Spanish speakers. If I could be of any assistance in those matters or in future matters with Spanish-language users, please do not hesitate to ask. --Lmm1245 (talk) 17:22, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

If you father was on military duty when making this pictures, proper license tag should be {{PD-USGov-Military-Marines}}. Please also credit your father in description. However you could mention that you scanned photos. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:03, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Mass Deletion[edit]

Greetings. I have gotten an alarming amount of alerts from Wikipedia, which isn't the most helpful things. All the files I uploaded are mine. I made them in Photoshop or made them in a music creator app that I paid for with my own money. Also, a fictional state with a questionable notability? This is directly from this link [2] , "A sandbox is a testing environment that isolates untested code changes and outright experimentation from the production environment or repository". My own user sandbox is for experimentation. I don't see why deleting files I made myself for amusement, comical emotions, etc is really necessary. I'd really like to know why the files I uploaded are being "mass-deleted". For what? I don't know, but it's not needed and unnecessary. Eugene, can you explain why you are deleting the files? I'm sorry if I didn't place the license, but what was the reason to place those deletion templates?

--PMaciasL (talk) 16:28, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

What's the issue? I can't even upload my own works without having an administrator delete them? My sandbox is where those images are being used, and later in a draft. Just like any other files, apparently I can't upload any of them without them being removed. For what reason? I don't know and I'd like those questions answered since I realized upload files relating to a Micronation is a "fictional state". It isn't fictional. I dedicate almost eight full hours a day on creating art and updating another wiki, and for this to happen on Wikipedia? Back in the day when I had another account, Wikipedia admins were not like this at all. I don't know what some of these admins are doing but it either needs to stop or something needs to be fixed, as me uploading files for my own personal sandbox is not allowed I'm guessing in Wikipedia anymore. I'm sure a plethora of other people have personal sandboxes with their own things. yet, I manage to upload my own copyrighted arts with the following license below and I'm being accused of uploading files relating to a fictional state? Of course it's questionable notability. It's a sandbox. I haven't yet finished adding up all the sources, so I really don't see a reason as to "mass deleting" all the actual files I uploaded and created with my own time and money.
--PMaciasL (talk) 16:46, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Please read Commons:Project scope. Internet offer a lot of other places to upload personal files. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:46, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
I have carefully viewed the Project scope on Commons. The files aren't really personal, but are going to be used later in an article draft. They are being used in my sandbox to make sure I don't mess things up. Then, I will move it to a draft space where the draft might be able to turn out as an article. That's whyI am asking if you could please reconsider not deleting the important files. Thank you!

File:Kanimeshi, The ekiben at Engaru station.jpgの削除依頼について。[edit]

Tokutotoo (talk) 09:04, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 13:04, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 13:17, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't know Japanese :-( Please Commons:Derivative works. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:01, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 22:09, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 22:24, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 22:47, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
Please ask help of Japanese speaking administrator. You could crop or blank packaging to keep photo. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 00:38, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 04:04, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Tokutotoo (talk) 12:05, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Uploads about Telmo Vergara and his works[edit]

EugeneZelenko, thanks for your revision on my recent uploads. The two images of Telmo Dias de Castro Vergara are digitalizations of the original photographs made by me. I have these photographs myself, that's because I'm the great-grandson of Telmo Vergara. And I also took photographs of the book covers, cause I have the books with me. I will add more information to the uploads, but I don't think they should be deleted. Sorry, I have few experience with commons. Can you give me instructions of how to add the necessary information?--Alexandre Fiori (talk) 15:20, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Owning physical copies doesn't mean owning of copyrights. However, some of works may be in public domain. You need to find out information about photographers, painters, etc. See also Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Brazil. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:37, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi EugeneZelenko, I just corrected some information in the following images: "Telmo Dias de Castro Vergara 2.jpg", "Telmo Dias de Castro Vergara.jpg" and "Assinatura Telmo Vergara.svg". The other three images of the signatures were uploaded in the wrong way, so they can be eliminated (the exception is the .svg one). I'll be soon getting the name of the author of the book covers. Thanks! --Alexandre Fiori (talk) 18:23, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, both photos claimed you authorship, still need to be fixed. Owning physical copy doesn't mean owning copyrights. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:52, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Files marked for deletion[edit]

Apologies if this the wrong place to do this but this communication system isn't at all intuitive.

You've marked a number of files I've uploaded for deletion. Rather than delete them can you tell me what I need to do to keep them? They are all taken from a book published in London in 1862 which I have been proofreading on Wikisource (Great Neapolitan Earthquake of 1857, Volume 2) and are for re-insertion back into the transcribed book.

The author Robert Mallett (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Mallet) died in 1871 - more than 100 years ago - so the work is out of copyright.

Regards,

Chris

Images are extracted from public domain book, so you need to fix license tags in images to use same one as for book. {{cc-by-sa-4.0}} didn't exist in 1862. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 02:27, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Files by Lucas Pianta marked for deletion[edit]

File:Scriptorium sao gallo.png File:Scriptorium Of Tábara.jpg Hello, EugeneZelenko. Thank you for your warnings about the licences of the images I uploaded to the Commons. I am new here and didn't know exactly how to do it. I actually have the infos about who made, where and when the image of the scriptirum of Tabara was made and thought i'd done it properly, but it seems that I was wrong. About the St. Gaal Abbey's plant image, what I did was to cut it to show where the scriptorium was located, but I see that I did it wrong when I wrote that the license was mine, I should have imagined that the proper thing to do was writing the infos about the abbey's plant, and not about who cuted the image. About those images which seemed to be prints from movies, that's wright. They are screen prints from The Name of the Rose, a movie; The Secret of Kells, an animation and Vikings, a series by History Channel and I already asked for them to be deleted urgently. I apologise about those mistakes and understand the importance of using the right licenses. I would really appreciate if you could help me to use the right licenses, since I am new at Wikipedia and not used to its rules. Also, those Tabara and St. Gaal images are very important for my work and I fear it wouldn't be as good as it could if I don't use them. So, I would really appreciate if I could only change the licenses and still be using them. Thank you, again. And sorry if I did something wrong. --Lucas Pianta (talk) 17:29, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

File:Scriptorium sao gallo.png and File:Scriptorium Of Tábara.jpg are not your own work. They are seemed very old, so should be in public domain. You need to fix license tags. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:59, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Yes, that's right, they are not my own work. They were handmade in the Middle Ages. As you can see, the author of Tabara's image is Beatus of Liebana and it was made in 1220, also, the license I used for it was public domain. Should I change something in that picture? About the other picture, how can I change its license for public domain and edit its infos? Thank you. --Lucas Pianta (talk) 15:46, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

File pages could be edited as regular pages. Sorry, but {{cc-zero}} didn't exist in 1220. You need to use public domain tags with period of copyrights protection. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:50, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi there,

I work for Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and we noticed that our logo was removed from the museum's wiki page saying that it was a "non-trivial logo" and was a copyright violation. Can you elaborate more on this and tell me what I need to do for it to be acceptable to stay on the page? The file was named Slugger-museum-logo-304.jpeg.

Thanks,

--Fuchs nick (talk) 18:04, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Please ask museum official (director, lawyer, etc) to send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review and image undeletion. Alternatively you could upload logo locally to project which allow non-free media, for example, English Wikipedia. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:19, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Mirai Suenaga undelete[edit]

Hi EZ, can you undelete these? Looking at the evidence, the original author has released the character under a free license, so speedy doesn't apply. See Category:Mirai Suenaga.

I think will be good idea to dig into issue deeply. Character claimed to be created for TV program, so copyrights transfer is possible. Commons:OTRS clarification from Danny Choo should solve problem. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:17, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello, I signed the music author (music session in this case) and listed the songs, as it is on freemusicarchive.org which is the source of music files. Is there something I missed? Perhaps derivative work is if I use music in the manner I did- Mixed together with interviews? Music is used as background music. It is instrumental music.

Sorry, but music is licensed under terms of CC-BY-NC-4.0. You need to remove or find music with license compatible with Commons:Licensing. You could not also claim own work when work(s) of other person(s) is used. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:42, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

It is licensed with non commercial NC use, and I see now that is not in tune with commons policy. However, this video was for non commercial use, but understand that there must be some other reasons with the policy. And Own work was editing. Sorry for trouble. Will be more in detail in the future. You can remove video. Thank you. Best, Misha

Deletion of File:Faunawatch.png[edit]

I have written permission from the guys behind the brand to use it, and that's exactly why I uploaded it, so why have you deleted it, please? 213.49.5.191 15:40, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Please ask organization official (head, lawyer, etc) to send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review and logo undeletion. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:43, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the information, and I will do so! Bart Versieck (talk) 18:26, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Grupo Desportivo Águias de Camarate.png[edit]

Why did you delete the logo of the football club Grupo Desportivo Águias de Camarate? There is no right being violated. It's just a shared of information, usage of a logo so that the people know about it, its free of use. Google it. --Daniel AR Pires (talk) 19:23, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

This is non-trivial logo. Availability on Internet doesn't mean free license. See Commons:Licensing. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:49, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

I followed every rule and tried to upload it just like all the other football clubs did in their wikipedia pages. Like: "https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Madrid_Club_de_F%C3%BAtbol" and "https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_Lisboa_e_Benfica". So if you deleted it can you please help me get it back up again or undelete it? --Daniel AR Pires (talk) 15:58, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Both logos are uploaded locally on Portuguese Wikipedia as non-free images. Please read local rules there. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:36, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

So I understand, but how do I upload it like the other logos? I tried to follow the same principal and selected the respective License and also put in the description that it was a logo but still got taken down. So can you undelete it and make the necessary changes to stay in accordance with the rules? Please. --Daniel AR Pires (talk) 14:44, 15 August 2018 (UTC) I think I already did it right, check it out.--Daniel AR Pires (talk) 14:59, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Non-free media is not allowed on Commons. See Commons:Licensing. Please learn how to upload onto Portuguese Wikipedia and how to describe non-free media correctly there. See descriptions of both logos which you provided as examples. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:05, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Don't delete my file[edit]

I created this imageFile:Tom_sawyer.jpg with the intention of only representing the literary character Tom Sawyer as it would be if it were a real person, I did not use this photo to promote myself, because I do not work with anything related to creation of graphic images. I do not speak english very well.

As I wrote, there are much better historical illustration of this character. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:48, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Please, proceed with the deletion of the following files[edit]

I have uploaded File:ABeamer Logo.svg, File:ABeamer Screenshot.png which I'm the sole copyright owner, however, due the fact it was meant to be used in the page ABeamer, a page that I created and describes an open-source software that I created which was tagged for speedy deletion, due conflict of interest.

In that sense, those 2 files no longer fit the purpose of their existence in wikipedia. Please, proceed with the deletion.

Screenshot include advertisement. You could crop it. Logo should be used on article in Wikipedia or at least description should describe software it represents. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't know Hebrew :-( Are you only heir of people depicted? Also owning physical copy may not mean owning copyrights. See also Commons:Copyright rules by territory if photos may be in public domain because of age. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:53, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Krislbarg commons photos[edit]

Hello,

I see you have listed for all of my photos to be deleted.

These are from my own personal collection of photographs I have taken

Can you advise me on how I should back them up with sources etc?

Thanks

You could upload photos in original resolution with EXIF to proof your authorship. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:48, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Hill House School coat of arms.svg[edit]

I made this file using Inkscape. As you can see the official rendition of the coat of arms used as a logo for the school don't look the same --RaphaelQS (talk) 18:03, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, you are not author of original design. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:36, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
What are you talking about. Coat of arms aren't protected by copyright, only specific rendition. I made this rendition myself. As you can SEE the two renditions aren't the same. --RaphaelQS (talk) 11:19, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Why educational institution could not have logo and own copyrights on it? Of course, copyrights may expire, but this this should be said in description and proper license tag is used. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:02, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Problem about my post en "Vikio amas Zeojn"[edit]

I thank for the notification of the problem about the copyrights existing in my post. I am sure that there are no problems, but I do not know in which photo is the problem noticed and so I cannot solve it. The most parte of the photos are taken in the public streets; some are of the marble bust of Zamenhof, which is in the Esperanto Library, sculpted by Riccardo Rossi, and owned by the library itself, where me and others of the Esperanto Group voluteers. How can I remove the noticed problem? I am not so expert to do it by alone! Thanks for your help, Enrico (Apuano1)

Are you photographer? If so, please reupload photos as separate files, preferably in original resolution with EXIF.
In case of bust, please ask Riccardo Rossi to send permission to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permission review.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:10, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Good morning and thanks for your help! The photographer is my friend and esperantist Alessandro Simonini; we decided to post not only photos, but a full article with phrases and photos, to partecipate in the "Premio Kvinpetala Stelo". I will try to put the photos in the original resolution with EXIF in our file.

Unfortunately, the sculptor R. Rossi died in the year 1983 ( https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riccardo_Rossi_(scultore) ); therefore, I do not understand why we should ask, now, to the heirs, for a permission about a sculptur that was regularly purchased around the year 1976 by the esperantists of Massa, Tuskany, just for their Esperanto Library.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Apuano1 (talk • contribs) 07:33, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
You need to ask Alessandro Simonini to upload photos himself or to send permission to OTRS.
Did Riccardo Rossi have hair(s)? If so, they inherited copyrights and could give permission(s).
It's better to place text in relevant WMF project then with photos.
