Library of Congress[edit]

Hi, thanks for hunting down and uploading all these images of people for biographies. If possible, for the images taken from the Library of Congress, could you:

  • For the source use {{LOC-image}}
  • For the author, unless one is listed under "Creator(s)", please leave it blank. Bain is the publisher.
  • For the license, not that there's anything wrong with your tags, but more specific tags detailing the collection of the image are available like {{PD-Bain}} and {{PD-Detroit}}.
  • Be careful about dates. The dates the LOC lists for its collections are very general. The date you want is listed under "Date Created/Published". Also watch out for automatic dates added by the upload wizard.

At the very least if you don't want to do all that, it would be very helpful if you included the original hyperlink in the source, both for adding more information, and for accurate rights assessment which is very important on commons. My dates are the accurate ones, we are currently in the November 1917 tranche. A few of the images in each development batch have dates etched into the gelatin, and there is an incremental number that corresponds to the development batch. Those developed in the same batch have the same number. This can be confirmed by finding the corresponding event in the New York Times archive. The upload wizard forces me to fill the author field. All these can be changed in a batch process since I am consistent in the way I upload them. You can participate if you want to, the LOC is crowdsourcing context for the images at Flickr. They ask that you find the event and more details about the person pictured. Here is an example of the work being done
About the dates I was making a more general comment, though I based it off the few of your uploads I personally ran across, apologies if it sounded like I was accusing you of writing the wrong dates and thanks for your diligence in ascertaining the proper dates, it's not always easy figuring those out. For the upload wizard, maybe you could try putting the {{unknown}} template in instead, but personally the wizard gave me a lot of trouble so I don't blame you then. Thanks for the information about the crowdsourcing, I did see the resulting information on a few photos and found it to be very illuminating and I will strongly consider participating, especially since I've been going through images on the LOC and trying to see if they could be used on any articles. Is there a trick to downloading? Chrome browser has right click download disabled. You only have the magnification tool and a screenshot, how do you do it?

It is amazing that someone can go from not being remembered for 75 years to now in an encyclopedia, or at least in Wikidata, which is more like a biographical dictionary for the human entries.

Hi Richard, where did you get this scan from? Did you scan it yourself? Could you add a bibliographic reference to it? Or did you find it anywhere on the Internet? Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 22:38, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

It came from the Long Branch Public Library clipping collection and the original reference is unknown. It was emailed to me by the research librarian who is working with me to create a canonical list of their mayors (there are now three mayors claiming to be mayor in the same year). We solved an earlier mystery with two mayors because one resigned under a corruption charge thanks to a New York Times article. I have been searching in Newspapers.com and Google Books but no luck so far. It talks about a future event occurring in 1911, and I believe the terms of office were for three years, hence the 1910 or circa 1910 date. Have you tried looking for the source? Hi Richard, thanks for your reply. I'm surprised that the library maintains newspaper clippings without any reference to the original newspaper and the date. But are surely right with your assessment that this small article has been published before 1911. BTW, the New York Times published a lengthy obituary for him on 9 August 1934, p. 17. I have the obit and forwarded it to the librarian. I wish more NJ newspapers had archives as well maintained as the New York Times. Even NJ.com which has contemporary articles does not have its early entries. Most of the links at Wikipedia for early articles are dead and Wayback does not have them because they used a no-robot file to keep out news scrapers. It looks like judges had 5 year terms, and the mayors were 3 years. Are you interested in New Jersey research? How did you come across Wilbur A. Heisley? RAN (talk) 14:08, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
I came across this file by accident and wondered if it would be possible to give a more specific bibliographic reference. My personal interests focus on Ireland and in case of Ireland I have access to multiple historic newspaper archives.
