The Internet of Things or IoT is simply about letting objects connect to each other over the internet. While we have been used to accessing the net through our screens, we are increasingly seeing other everyday objects, like jewellery, or household appliances that can send and receive data over the net for a variety of reasons.

On a larger scale, IoT devices can be used to create ‘smart cities’, where bins know when they are full, traffic lights that can actively make decisions about best traffic flow or parks that can tell city officials that they need to be watered more. The analyst firm Gartner says that by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices. To a certain degree, these devices will be able to operate between themselves, without human interaction.

When you hear the term ‘Big Data’ it is usually referring, at least in part,  to the huge amount of information that is being generated by connected IoT devices, including your phones. There are big implications for pretty much every major sector, this ‘machine 2 machine’ communication over such a wide variety of areas will affect your life in numerous ways, most likely all for the better.

At MakerClub, our robotics teach you a range teach you a range of technology skills including how to creating your own connected products. You can learn more about IoT, coding and a whole host of other skills by joining one of our brilliant robotics courses (link).
