Can anybody suggest a shareware ( not free to try) control software? I'll be using Mach3 when I can afford it, but for the time being, is there a free program?

The only one I know of is the Linux cnc program. If you have a dedicated computer for the machine it may be worth it to run it on Linux.

If you want to try something really old you can look at TurboCNC.
This runs on DOS so you have to jump around a bit to create a machine that boots to DOS (FreeDOS will work, so will Win98 booted to DOS).
However, it will run on very meager hardware so is cheap to set up from that point of view.

I have a Win98 machine that has a bootmenu so I can boot to Win98 or to MSDOS. This allow me to transfer files using the win98 networking, thne cut after rebooting.
