Does anyone know where to get a drill chuck with a straight shank suitable for mounting in an ER16 collet? I think I can hold a 1/4" shaft, but I am unable to find anything that looks like it will work. Any ideas?
Are you talking about something like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-1-4-MIN...8?pt=BI_Tool_Work_Holding&hash=item51b7ff7084
check out http://www.littlemachineshop.com/ They stock all the parts to replace on mini lathes and mills in their stock. They also have a huge quantity of items that can be used for different uses. Like making a safe Vertical Mill from a Drill Press. Which I have done. Bob
Something in the ball park: http://www.ebay.com/itm/One-PC-0-1-...S_Srewdrivers_Nut_Drivers&hash=item2329a1f4a8. You'd just need to swap the existing shank with a smooth shank cut from a 1/4-20 bolt. Whether or not to trust it at high RPMs is up to you to decide. Beyond that, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heavy-Duty-...682?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27df1018fa and http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Drill-...088?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35abb54428 may be possibilities.
Thanks, that's what I need. I had seen the Jacobs chucks and was thinking I'd have to go to a machine shop and have a bolt lathed.
I'd suggest lodging a jam nut up against the back side to keep the head stable. Let us know how it all works out and if runout is within acceptable tolerances.
