    The videos are great @Ridgeback , The one I was interested is the 1/4" wood and I see on redit where you talk about having the beam focused down to .5mm to get the power needed, but does this still require multiple passes to get though or just one cut and your through?
    sorry for the newbie laser questions :)

    Hi,

    Yes, 1/4inch balsa wood is totally cut-able. It does require several passes though (about 3). 1/4 hard wood would be very difficult without a dozen passes or so. Everyday softwood, such as from craft shops are good options. When I burned up my first laser, I cut a large gear out of 1/16th balsa, in one spectacular pass at full power! It worked...once :( Now it's all about 3 passes or so. Nothing wrong with running a couple passes, letting it all cool down and running another 3. For foam, no extra passes are necessary, it rips right through that stuff incredibly fast, I have to back down the duty cycle and speed up the movement. Foam is actually my favorite thing to cut, because of the speed I get near instant gratification :)

    Hi,
    No, nothing visually clear, or reflective. I would need to switch to an IR laser. Visible laser beams pass right through clear objects. I even tried to cut a dark piece of acrylic, and it didn't do a thing.
