For those that are having trouble obtaining the OX gantry plates, I can offer Commercially waterjet cut Gantry plates to help get your build off the ground. The set includes the 4 Gantry plates and 4 off the frame corner brackets all cut from 6mm Aluminium. I had a set cut for myself and they turned out pretty nice. Buying single sets of parts is quite expensive , however the service I used offered significantly better prices if ordered in bulk, ie if the full sheet of Aluminium is utilised. The discounted cost is AUD$77 per 8 piece set, the single set cost me AUD$115. I’m not interested in making huge profits through this venture, I’m asking cost price plus 10% to cover my incidental costs (local freight, packing materials, etc). So the cost would be AUD$85/8pc set plus postage. There is a 22 set min order qty though, if there’s enough interest for them I’ll order a batch. It would be a 2kg parcel so International shipping from Australia may be a bit expensive, although I may have found an economy air mail service that would ship to the US for approx AUD$35 for example. For anyone interested in doing a similar initiative in your local area I’ve attached the DXF I used to cut my parts, they are as per Kram242’s design, the only difference is I’ve removed the OX logo to reduce cutting costs and added the 4 triangular corner brackets. Cheers Anthony
Very cool of you Anthony this will be a big help to get the guys up and running. Thank you for taking the time to look into this and offer this service to others.
Hi Yusef, I'm in Melbourne, the plates would fit in an Auspost Medium (3kg) Pre-Paid Satchel so postage anywhere in Aus would be $13.40. People in Melbourne are welcome to collect from me.
Count me in! I'm in the US and not particularly in a hurry to receive it, so I can wait for a bigger batch. The total should be AUD$120, right?
Hi Franco, that's great. AUD$120 will cover the parts and basic postage, insurance would be $8.5 extra ($150 coverage). I'm looking at using this postal service, http://www.skippypost.com.au/
I thought I read somewhere that there may not be enough adjustment in the eccentrics to That's correct, Australian price would be $85+$13.40.
No problems, I'm not going to ask for any money until there is enough numbers to warrant ordering the parts though. I need 3-4 sets for friends and colleagues, and between you and maybe Yusef thats 6. I'd like commitments for approx 13-14 sets so I'm not left too far out of pocket and I'd take my chances and offer the leftovers on eBay and the like. Also, if any changes need to be made to the design, they can be incorporated now. I read a couple of instances in the build discussion where it appears the eccentrics may not have enough adjustment to take out all the freeplay, if this is a concern I can reduce the pitch spacing between the V-wheel mounting holes. Unfortunately I wont have any 20x80 until April to verify this myself.
I might be able to get a set cnc cut to your dxf in nz and check sizing and any updates IF that helps?
Thanks for offering to do that, perhaps if I find this set of parts is too loose I'll update the DXF and send it to you. I will know within the next week or so if the hole spacing is ok or not, the local v-slot distributor had a small offcut of 20x80 which is probably just long enough to do this verification. My Openbuilds hardware should arrive this week as well, too bad the v-slot probably won't be available here till April.
I have trialed the 2080 offcut in the first set of plates I had made and they fit up very well. Less than half the adjustment range in the eccentric was used to snug the rollers onto the rail. The cut quality is pretty good, the holes are marginally undersized as they come off the Waterjet table so I cleaned them up with 5mm and 9/32 drills and they are fine. Attached is an image of the eccentric nuts hopefully demonstrating the range of motion used to snug the rollers onto the rails. Therer is also an image showing the parts that are included in a set of parts. Now that I've confirmed the plates work with actual parts I'll be ordering a batch. Let me know if you'd like a set.
I'm in let me know when they're available I can pick up in Melb or happy for you to ship to me if that's easier
I'm just looking at starting my build but I'm going to need the plates. I'm interested but I need to decide on a design before I commit. I will keep checking back. Thanks for doing this.
It looks like airmail charge to Italy would be $50 + $7.25 insurance ($125 coverage) There is a tracked option that is available for an additional $10. Rates can be checked here; please not this is an economy airmail service so may be a little slower than Australia post. http://www.skippypost.com.au/rate_calculator.php?a=0&s=e28aab03fe705612d2bc26951a4db958&r=8112 Alternately, Australia post rates can be checked here; http://auspost.com.au/apps/postage-calculator.html The parcel is ~1.9kg for the calculations
Picked up my batch of Gantry plates from the Waterjet cutter today. All looks good, I verified these parts on the 20x80 I have and the eccentrics tighten down without a problem. They are AUD$85 plus postage for the 8pc set.
Hi guys, My plates arrived in fantastic time from oz, well packed and arrived safe and sound. The parts look top notch with a cool mat finish from the water jet cutting that I think makes for an really classy look with the black Vslot. I have finally had a few free nights to give each part a small debur (mainly as I am a bit over the top when it comes to having smooth edges) and was considering painting each part but think I may do this next build around as I am just frothing to get this assembled. So far I have just done a rough fit to make sure I have cut my lengths of Vslot the right lengths and will be doing the final adjustment and calibration later this week. I will save photos for later as I need a bit of time to tidy my workshop after the weekend of tinkering. Thanks Anthony for hooking me up with a set of plates!
I just wanted to chime in and say that I have received my plates from Anthony. They were packaged very well and they arrived promptly. His communication with me the whole time was excellent. As for the plates; They are obviously to spec but aside from that they have minor aesthetic blemishes (very minor scratching etc) which is to be expected, as well as some 'flaring' and serration at the bottom of the cut depth. This is due to the waterjet cutting process and the thickness of the material - cannot be avoided. The bottom edges will only require a quick pass with some emery paper or fine file if you want to be pedantic. The hole sizes are good. Overall I am VERY happy with what I got for my money so thanks again for going to the trouble of providing this service for us fellow makers Anthony. Much appreciated. Yusuf
Hi. Are sets of the gantry plates still available. This would be my first step towards getting started on a new OX project! I'm in Hobart, so pickup is not an option. How do I go about the purchase? Chris
