Sorry Robert, but you know what they say about a better mousetrap... I actually went through a couple of different paints. I started with some stuff from a craft store, but it left a sort of rubbery finish that showed brush strokes. I ended up stripping that off and repainted using "Model Master" enamel that came from my local hobby shop. I imagine you'd get the same results with Testors model paint too, this just happened to be the brand they carried. I added just a touch of thinner to it so that it would flow nicely and settle into a smooth glass-like finish. Hopefully the aluminum is porous enough that it will stick well and I won't have any flaking issues. So far it seems to be holding up well, but then all the plates have done is lay on the workbench...
Sweet! I was thinking nail polish with thinner but model paint would prob be the same cost and hold up better
Lol for sure but you want to thin it and drip it in then swirl to spread sit and let dry. That's how I'm going to try it anyway Milling a name plate today Another full kit is in the works about 1-2 days out
@skrider Well I decided on a blue pearl swirl and it seemed to work out well Will see how it looks after it fully drys
I got my plates from Robert this morning. Actually it was yesterday, my wife checked the mail on her way to work so I didn't get them till she got home around 12:30am. They look good even though he sold them to me as cosmetic blemished. Don't think most people would be able to see the blemish unless they knew to look. Can't wait to get some more of the parts so I can make some progress. Going to be slow going though due to the budget.
Well here it is the second full OX AI kit, I have also added the 65mm bolts required for the X axis assembly and all spacers are milled from Red acrylic The Z axis is fitted for nema17
Ty! After this one goes I won't be doing anymore till mine is done. The mill will be to busy milling Kits for my new build. Only ten will be put together for release
Which bit? I just spent $20 on another plastics bit mentioned around here. That's a great looking finish, even better for $8!
I pic them up now at Canadian Tire a local hardware/everything type store. It is a simple dual flute "not two flute" 1/8 - 1/4 shank next time I'm there I plan in getting a few more for sure I'm sure it's for wood but works well
I was just thinking seeing the plastic cut out and the paint added in the OX recess I wonder how cool it would look if you could glue a colored plastic inlay in the OX aluminum recess Just a thought
