Previews of my SVGs are broken[edit]

I have uploaded some SVG files, some playing cards. The SVG is very simple, and works directly in the browser (so why do you even have png previews). However, the png previews are broken. Some of the cards have some of the artwork but most do not. How are you making the previews (inkscape has not trouble converting them to png). Is there a way I can "fix" these previews?

e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2C.svg has symbols (clubs and digit "2") which simply do not show!

Update: The problem is the use of a "use" object without both "width" and "height" attributes. Sounds like a bug in the preview stuff. I am re-uploading my cards with added attributes. The original, smaller, files are at https://www.me.uk/cards/

Problem with my svg image colors[edit]

So I updated a map and uploaded it. On the file page view it seems to be colorless. However, when I open it, I can see the original colors back again. I think the reason is that I used var function in the CSS.

Does anyone know how to solve the issue?

Copyright of Photos Created for Client by "Photographer for Hire"[edit]

We very often need to upload photos provided by a "photographer for hire". As the contractor of the "photographer for hire" Copyright law seem to assume that unless there is a written contract otherwise, the contractor by virtue of payment of consideration for the photos acquired by contractor from the "photographer for hire", owns the copyright of such photos.

There seems to be no notification template which cover this circumstance? Should not a "copyright circumstance template" to cover this situation be created and accepted by the wiki-commons community? Otherwise, how should this be handled if no new "copyright template circumstance" is warranted ?

@Jeff G.: the “translations” from 16:48 and 16:55 (UTC) are garbage. If you want to produce anything sensible with machine translation from English, then use grammar with as little ambiguity as possible – remember that part-of-speech tagging in English is very problematical. Copyright help regarding File:Hildegard (Felizitas) Beetz 1943.jpg[edit]

Datei:Hildegard_(Felizitas)_Beetz_1943.jpg

--NBarchiv (talk) 16:01, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Winter 1942/43 in Rome: my mother has a photo taken of herself - for her then fiancée Gerhard Beetz.

It's called a 'long-distance relationship' today: he's on the eastern front - she's in Italy ...

until the year 1969 (the visit of Duilio Susmel and two other Italians who had previously stalked them) It was known to me as 'family owned', and I wondered why it had disappeared since then. a few weeks ago (I had the estate (24 removal boxes!) again durchforstet more accurate), I found the original photo again. it came 1996 in a very regretfully apologized letter of prof. Renzo Santinon from Rome, posing as 'The younger of two journalists' outete, who had then appeared with Susmel in Bonn for a first interview.

the first photo 'felizitas.jpg' had a much worse quality (clearly 'newspaper print', with exaggerated contrast). I recognized it right away and then was amazed when Erich Kuby's book came out in 1982 with just that bad copy. Erich Kuby: Treachery in German. How the Third Reich ruined Italy . Hamburg, Hoffmann and Campe 1982, ISBN 3-455-08754-X, pp. 280ff. (see also: in the picture section from p.336, from the local "picture credits" is not out, with which authority this photo could be printed: -> illustration proof S. 569)

In march 2007 I started the article 'Hilde Purwin' and immediately received many comments from all over the world - including dr. de: Lutz_Klinkhammer, the head of the department 'german-italian relations' in DHI. He then visited me personally in Bonn-Endenich to take OSS - original documents. (and later a second time to return the unneeded documents). I had to go back then with the

content copy in the book and retouch the printed text on the bottom right. this photo can also be found on en_wiki and it_wiki.

SVG Upload problem[edit]

I create a SVG-file but the upload failed with this message:

This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a
web browser. See the FAQ for more information.

The SVG-file seems to be correct in other tools e.g. Web browsers. I copied the content of the svg to User:UlrichAAB/Svg problem. --UlrichAAB [?] 18:41, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

I read that save as "Normales SVG" with Inkscape helps, but not in this case.--UlrichAAB [?] 06:38, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
I saved it with Inkscape as "Plain SVG", and it uploaded on a test. Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:41, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
I switched my Inksacpe to English and used save as "Plain SVG" (should be the same as "Normales SVG" in German): result => same problem --UlrichAAB [?] 10:11, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
@UlrichAAB: Source that worked (for me) at User:Ronhjones/svgtest . Maybe the system is more lax for an admin...? I have seen this HTML issue in the past - if that don't work - remove all the "http://" from the source - so line 1 looks like xmlns:dc="purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" - one of those external links is causing the problem. Found href to unsafe data[edit]

Hi there! I was trying to upload a derivative work of this file, from which I translated the text. I opened the SVG with Photoshop (I don't have any vector editor in my computer), translated it, and tried to upload, using derivativeFX. When I did that, an error was returned, which I will copy below. Is there something I can do? I don't know too much (near nothing) on vector graphics. Thanks in advance! Guilhermebm (talk) 22:54, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@Guilhermebm: the text data:img/png;base64,ivborw0kggoaaaan... indicates an embedded raster graphic encoded in base64. The SVG renderer Wikimedia sites uses will work with embedded graphics but not with links to external image resources, which is what's happening here. I don't know why it turned an embedded graphic into an external link, but ideally, the original SVG should be edited to remove the embedded graphic entirely. The embedded image is data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAgAAAAICAAAAADhZOFXAAAAAXNCSVQI5gpbmQAAAA5JREFUCJlj+M8AAxSxAB83B/mkB+5iAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC, which is just a diagonal line turned into a pattern to provide the hatching on the left side of the diagram. That should be fixed in the original before creating derivatives, but I'm not sure how best to do that. clpo13(talk) 00:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, @Clpo13:! I had noticed the diagonal line had vanished when I opened the SVG using PS, and thought it was weird, but couldn't find a reason. I'll try using a vector editor and see what happens. Thanks again! Guilhermebm (talk) 00:12, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Clpo13: I've solved it :D When I saved the SVG file on the vector editor, it asked me to either link or embed the files, and that was it! Thanks again for the help! Best regards, Guilhermebm (talk) 03:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Guilhermebm: You're welcome! I'm glad I was able to help. clpo13(talk) 16:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Source of free publicity photo[edit]

Hi, this is a free publicity photo File:Miranda Esmonde-White.jpg. I'm getting error messages saying I didn't enter the source, but I did enter it: Essentrics, Montreal, QC. What more do you need? When I uploaded the file I also got a deletion log from 2015, but this same photo is a free photo. I think it is fairly common practice for television personalities and other people to give out free promotional photos. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 23:26, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@SusanLesch: Who licensed it under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license? Where exactly did you get it? Who photographed it, when and in what country?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 00:15, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi, @Jeff G.: I asked for a free photo for Wikipedia DYK through a chat room on essentrics.com. It came by email from the Marketing & Public Relations Director of Essentrics. The photographer Jimmy Hamelin was identified in that mail. The subject is a Canadian resident of Montreal. I don't know when it was taken. I gave it an attribution license because the source gave me the author's name. Do I have to ask OTRS to record permissions? The last time I looked they had a nine month backlog. Thanks for your reply. -SusanLesch (talk) 00:59, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@SusanLesch: Did the email message mention licensing or copyright? Can you send me a copy of it with full Internet headers via Special:EmailUser/Jeff G.? @Jeff G.: I don't have any reason to send mail to you (your user page doesn't say anything about this special case). I am just going to send permissions mail, remove the deletion flag, and mark the file OTRS pending. -SusanLesch (talk) 02:16, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

File:員林鎮靜修路平交道 - panoramio.jpg[edit]

Please look at "File:員林鎮靜修路平交道 - panoramio.jpg". The level crossing that used to exist on Jingxiu Road(靜修路), but has now been demolished. I found "Abolished level crossings" category on Wikimedia.commons. My question is: I'm not sure it can be regarded as "demolished level crossings" or not.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:39, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Not sure why we have "abolished". It's not a term in rail engineering use, at least not in the UK. Former level crossings is IMO adequate to describe this image. Rodhullandemu (talk) 08:42, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Problem with a pdf file[edit]

Hi. I would like to ask about the problem with file:Philosophical Transaction vol LIV.pdf: it seems broken in some way, but when I try to upload it again as a new version, the software writes to me that the file already exists and cannot be uploaded again. I have no problems to open the pdf file in my computer so I am not sure why it has been uploaded so broken. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 18:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jan.Kamenicek: The file is fine, I downloaded it OK. It looks like the wiki software cannot render a thumbnail due to the large size. There are file limits (Commons:Maximum file size), but PDF is not listed. That page has suggestions about making a separate thumbnail and linking. Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:41, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: I think the problem must be deeper because it does not display the scanned pages in Wikisource either. It should not be because of the file size, as it is only 26.88 MB, while much bigger File:Časopis Vlasteneckého spolku muzejního v Olomouci, issue 112.pdf is 109.99 MB and is displayed without any problem both here and at Wikisource. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 08:41, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek:. Hmm, then maybe something went wrong at the thumbnail generation? I'm virtually out of ideas, maybe someone else can chip in. Final suggestions... (a) I can delete it and you upload again. (b) Use the "Upload a new version of this file" under the file history section. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:00, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: I tried to use "upload a new version" before, but the software gave warning that the file already existed and did not proceed uploading. It probably uploads only files which differ at least slightly.
Meanwhile I also found out that Wikisource pages do not display the scans of individual pages of this file too, so the problem must be deeper than just thumbnail generation :-( Jan Kameníček (talk) 15:12, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
However, it would be great if you tried to delete it and upload again. We would see if it helps. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 15:14, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek: Deleted - try again. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:38, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Meanwhile I uploaded another book, File:Czech Folk Tales.pdf, which i downloaded from archive.org/stream/czechfolktales00bauduoft#page/n9, and the result is the same :-( It seems there must be something wrong with the pdf files generated by archive.org. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 15:44, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek: Maybe a PDF version that wiki does not understand. I tried to "compress" the first one with Nuance Power PDF - it ended up as 50% bigger! Let me have a play for a while - maybe an export and re-PDF might work (at least I can delete my test uploads at will!) Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:51, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek: See File:Philosophical Transactions - Volume 054.pdf (might have to refresh browser) That has worked. Exported all pages as TIFF, and then made new PDF (made sure that "optimised for web view" was checked). The file ended up at 114,794,496 bytes - too big to upload, had to increase compression a bit and now at 102,442,602 bytes. My Power PDF is good, but I would guess that a full Acrobat Pro would be better. Also changing the tiffs to black and white will save space - depends if you like the old yellow paper or not. Do you want File:Czech Folk Tales.pdf done as well? Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:51, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: That is excellent, thanks very much! I would be really grateful if you could help me with the Folk Tales as well, as I have no elaborate software for pdf files and rely just on the files as they are directly downloaded. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 17:42, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek: ✓ Done File size has gone way up, but at least you can see the pages! Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:16, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Magnificent! Thanks very much for all the help. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 18:35, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
@Jan.Kamenicek: No problem. I know someone else with a proper Acrobat - I'll try tomorrow and see if it can be smaller file - I'm curious to know why it gets so big! But at least you have a working PDF now. Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:46, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Jan.Kamenicek:. Well, Acrobat made a smaller file as expected (about half the size I achieved). Changing to black and white did not help much - unless one turns the contrast right up to remove the "grey blotches". Acrobat reports that the original is a PDF/A format (sort of read-only), however removing that attribute did not make for a viewing document on commons. It's plain that the original file is very highly compressed - maybe wiki can't handle such high compression, no idea. I think that the only (current) cure for these files is what we have already done - export and re-make. I've raised it as a bug - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T203402. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:36, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much for all the effort! However, it seems they did not understand the problem in the phabricator :-) --Jan Kameníček (talk) 16:33, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Cropped version of existing image[edit]

I want to use a cropped version of File:St Mary, Bloxham, Oxon - Capital - geograph.org.uk - 1606470.jpg to highlight part of the decoration. I uploaded a new version of the file but it appeared that it over-wrote the original, so I reverted. What is the proper way to do this? I am not trying to replace the original, just add another version. Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 21:47, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Leschnei: When you want to crop an image you will find that the CropTool is very useful. It that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, like the one you want to make, you should upload the copped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 22:02, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Perfect, thank you. Leschnei (talk) 22:11, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Living person portrait photo with residential location information[edit]

I have found a photo of a living person on Commons (it is used on several pages on several Wikipedia projects) for which the extended metadata includes latitude and longitude information pointing to a unique, apparently residential street address. Is that okay? If not, what is the procedure for having that information securely removed? --Frans Fowler (talk) 10:11, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

You could re-upload image without coordinates and request oversight of old version. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:24, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Which you should do, if you think this is a problem. On the other hand, I would remind you that this is almost exactly what a phone book or city directory provides. - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks EugeneZelenko and Jmabel. I didn't know about oversight. I have checked the policy and it includes removal of non-public personal information such as (...) home addresses, so I have contacted someone on the Oversight team. Of course, what constitutes non-public personal information varies from country to country. Cheers, Frans Fowler (talk) 16:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

I agree with Jmabel. However, rather than remove the coördinates I would just degrade their precision, say to the nearest arc-minute (perhaps more if the location is very sparsely populated). For example my telling you that I’m at 53°35′ N 113°29′ W would scarcely help find my house; I estimate that there are some 3000 residential buildings ‘here’ with only 1′ of precision.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 17:16, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
The {{location withheld}} and {{location rounded}} templates are also useful for this purpose. clpo13(talk) 23:36, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks all of you. An oversighter was grateful for the report and has removed the coordinates. Concerning the suggestions above: (a) If an ordinary editor had made the change, the information would presumably still be visible in the history; (b) The purpose of a picture of the subject in a Wikipedia article is not to help people discover where the subject lives, even approximately. Cheers ---Frans Fowler (talk) 21:01, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

@Frans Fowler: regarding (a), one can edit a page or re-upload a file with altered metadata and then request that previous revisions or versions be hidden. As for (b), although other WMF projects are our principal ‘clientele’, we also seek to serve any & all other potential reusers, who might be interested in other aspects of a picture than its principal subject. Of course I have no idea whether or not there’s anything else of note in this particular photo, but in general I believe in being as ‘conservative’ as possible because we can’t anticipate every educational purpose a given item may serve.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:14, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

This flower looks ultra pink color, but it also looks like pale purple color. If anyone can help me check it out, I would really appreciate it!--Kai3952 (talk) 18:15, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

The scope of colour names is rather subjective, and often varies to a surprising degree between languages, so I wouldn’t generally try to specify them very narrowly: someone looking for red things might be annoyed having also to look under scarlet, vermilion, crimson, burgundy, &c. That said, we do already have Mauve flowers, which might be a better fit.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:27, 1 September 2018 (UTC) P.S. Our Pale purple flowers category seems to belong to a more organized system; the mauve cat might be anomalous. (03:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC))
I wouldn’t generally try to specify them very narrowly? Are you talking about this edit of mine: "[1]"?--Kai3952 (talk) 03:49, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
No, just the first thing that came to mind on the topic … I had only looked at the above image. I came across the cats with the floral colour palette, {{Navigation Flowers by color}}, after my first reply.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:13, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

@GajananKharde: I don’t know which competition you mean, but there are usually no restrictions on the type of device. Just use the highest quality settings available and upload the original image or a full-resolution version. Check the home page of the competition for any special rules. The quality may not be adequate for a top prize in a given contest, but we certainly welcome all contributions within COM:SCOPE.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:13, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

SVG slightly cut off[edit]

I have noticed that some SVG images (particularly logos) are slightly cut off and have a small section missing on one side, when viewed on Wikipeida, but when the same image is viewed using editing software such as InkScape they appear fine. For example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Supreme_court_crest_(official).svg is very slightly cut off on the right hand side of the "circle"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Guy%27s_and_St_Thomas%27_NHS_Foundation_Trust_logo.svg has the text on the bottom line cut off as well

ElshadK (talk) 13:58, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

@ElshadK: Both appear to be cut off in the source svg files, according to multiple browsers.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:19, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
If you look in Inkscape the page size (Ctrl-Shift-D) is 110.40 pixels wide and is right tight on the edge of the circle. Suspect therefore some rounding is taking place as a display cannot have a fraction of a pixel. Ideally the page size should be slightly bigger (say 112) and the image re-centred. Reduce blurriness[edit]

I uploaded a new version of File:Area code ND.png to reduce the blurriness. How long do I need to wait for the new version to show? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 08:43, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

No time at all - it's immediate. But your browser does not know the picture has changed and is caching the image. You need to purge the page Help:Purge. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:40, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Category in Category:Numbers...?[edit]

If I have photos of numbers on buildings (for example 84 Charing Cross Road, 6 Place de la Sorbonne or Kungsgatan 10), is there a category for these photos? I see a category for numbers on other things, but not on buildings. I would like to show all the different style and material on numbers and facades. // Zquid (talk) 13:31, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Category:House numbers. As it says there, "the term "house numbers" is used to refer to this device even when the number is attached to a commercial building." - Jmabel ! talk 16:36, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

School e-News Photo without Copyright Notice or Photographer[edit]

I have a photo published by a public high school e-newspaper from 2017, but there aren't any copyright notices or photographers listed. Would this count as public domain?

Unlikely. In most jurisdictions copyright arises by default and local laws determine how long that copyright subsists, so it's unsafe to assume public domain unless it's explicitly stated for an image. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:38, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
Following up on what Rodhullandemu said: under the Berne Convention, if work is copyrightable, then it is copyrighted by default. The U.S. and UK were late to implementing that, but since 1989 it's almost universal. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Use of a photo held by a library[edit]

Incorrect location coords[edit]

Is there a template to mark a (latitude & longitude) location as wrong? I see templates to mark it as malformed, but not as incorrect. - Jmabel ! talk 04:05, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

If location data are arguably and grossly irrelevant to the media, then why on Earth should the template remain machine readable? Wrap it to {{tlp}}. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 06:28, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
{{tlp}} is a good idea.
In this case, I just deleted the bad coords, since there is enough information in the description for someone to come through and get it right (which I will probably do when I'm on a good enough connection to use Google Maps for this). - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

I need help[edit]

Please I am a young and upcoming entrepreneur from Nigeria and I just want to all my possible best to help myself, I want to upload my brand profile on Wikipedia and I am new don't just know how to find my way around.

I will dully appreciate any help to help a dream come true. Thanks.

David Oluwabusayo is my name.

@StontEmpire: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are generally bad places to promote a brand. To have a Wikipedia article, one must already have significant coverage in reliable sources, such as books, scientific journals, and newspapers. Wikipedia regularly deletes articles which do not meet their criteria. Likewise, Wikimedia Commons has a policy of deleting content which is created for the purpose of advertisement.
We do welcome you to Wikimedia Commons, and I hope you decide to contribute, keeping in mind our project scope. For some general information on how you can help, see Commons:First steps. Also, if you tell us a bit more about your business, there may be specialized ways you can help. Please let us know if this interests you, or if you have any more questions. File:KMKadish.jpg - copyright concerns[edit]

Regarding creative commons copyright for this image

While I was not the original photographer, this image was created at the University of Houston in the Department of Chemistry IT department, and is currently the image on Dr. Kadish's www home page. I confirmed with the University of Houston, Department of Chemistry, IT department (Jerry Do was my contact, <jhdo@Central.UH.EDU>) that this image is acceptable to post with unlimited (creative commons) use.

Please let me know if any additional documentation is required to make sure this image is acceptable for publication.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Florence Snively (fdsnivel@uh.edu, kadasst@uh.edu or fsnockhart4235@att.net)

  • @FSnockhart: Great! See COM:OTRS for how Jerry Do can pass that permission to Commons, and once that is processed (which may take a while, there's a backlog) the permission can be restored. Make sure he references File:KMKadish.jpg so it is clear what this is about, and that he states a specific license. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

What should I do?[edit]

Please look at User_talk:Kai3952#Flickr2Commons and User_talk:Kai3952#Reply. He opposed the way that to download the images from Flickr to my own computer before upload it. Because he think that I should check the images that are within the FoP (of Taiwan). You can see the reason for deletion request at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Entrance sign at Datun Nature Park in Sanzhi.jpg. That really is a difficult problem for me! What should I do?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:31, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

  • The FoP issue and the Flickr2Commons issue are two separate issues. I have no knowledge of Taiwanese law, so I know nothing about the FoP issue but, yes, I would strongly recommend using Flickr2Commons for such transfers (with the possible exception that if it's your own work, and you've been clear that the accounts are the same person, you can upload separately on Commons). Flickr2Commons allows a bot to confirm the license on Commons is correct. This is important because the license on Flickr could be changed later, and we need the confirmation that it was correct at time of upload. You can make any edits you like afterward. For an example of editing afterward, see what I did with File:Mayor Uhlman at Bumbershoot, 1974 (43479308855).jpg - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

1940 'Illustrated War' photo[edit]

Hi - I have an old 1940 paper 'Illustrated War' magazine. In it (among other interesting things) is a photo of a Viscount Madeville OBE who was awarded honours for bravery etc. Out of interest I looked this chap up in Google, coming to a Wikipedia entry for him. There's no picture of the fellow and I wanted to upload this picture before the paper copy disappears forever and with it any digital record of his face.

So as far as I can see, having been taken in 1940, this picture would have fallen into the public domain in 1990 (50 years period). Mind you I could be wrong about that.

When I look at the options to upload to Wikipedia, I don't seem to find any possibility for uploading images that have entered the public domain (due to expired relevant period reference their creation date).

Any straightforward advice please?

@Sam Deeks: Hi,
Any mention of the photographer in the magazine? Regards, Yann (talk) 12:17, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Yann is right, the photographer is actually important because the copyright term in the UK is not determined by the date of first publication but by the lifetime of the author. If there is no attribution in the magazine, you could use {{PD-UK-unknown}} though to upload the photo at Commons. De728631 (talk) 13:56, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

File:Windsor Castle Hollar Panoramic view.jpg[edit]

Hi I live in Quebec Canada. I am retired and as a hobby I enjoy making the right size poster of a drawing tracing a large image and then burning tinting painting and varnishing on a large tree slice. I now have a 6 ft 4 inch tree slice that I would like to trace one of your images on. I would like your permission to use it. I only do this in winter and do not sell them. This is the image I would like to use. Thank You

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 00:13, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

I have a picture of myself sitting next to wall painting which I painted of the Zig-Zag Man. Will this be accepted? Most of your related instructions are for the computer savvy.
